Here are a few comparison photos I put together to show how crazy the transformation was! It crazy how much 3 days in the garage can change.

LETTERPRESS RESTORATION: DONE!

Day 5

Finally finished! How great is this thing? Its clean and beautiful and fully functional!
It will live in the garage for a bit but it will be going in the basement soon! We still need to replace the wood skids on the bottom, but that will wait until its moved inside the house, an di am waiting on new rollers to come in the mail.

LETTERPRESS RESTORATION: PAINT & PINSTRIPE

Day 3/Day 4

Day 3 was much like day 2, lost of cleaning/rust removal and painting all of the pieces! But day 4 meant pinstriping! A very daunting task, I'm a bit of a perfectionist so doing anything by hand for the first time is stressful. I was certain I would mess it up or it would look awful! Thankfully it turned out okay and I'm super happy about it! Find out tomorrow what it looks like...

Look how tiny it is once we removed 90% of the parts! It could get even smaller but we didn't need to go any further.

I used gold hobby paint, enamel so it will stick around for a while, and a squirrel hair pinstriping brush for clean, long lines!

LETTERPRESS RESTORATION: RUST REMOVAL

Day 2

There were 5 days between the day we got the press and when we started the restoration because my family had a get together at our cabin for the weekend. That was a long 5 days, I was greatly anticipating getting in the garage and starting the restoration! So when Monday rolled around, my dad and I got to work! Here are some photos before we began any work:

This was a three strep process: dissemble, clean, paint.
While my dad disassembled the press while I used a wire brush attachment with the sander to strip the rust and paint off of every piece. Eventually I started painting some pieces while he too over the cleaning.

By the end of the day we were absolutely covered in black dust
I used Rust-oleum in gloss black to paint after wiping every clean piece with mineral spirits.

More of this tomorrow and some painted pieces!
